Science for Justice

Coming soon! A new podcast that features discussions with people from around the globe, who are using all that science can muster to overcome environmental health problems — and achieve some justice along the way.

Join Alex Barclay as he reports on Environmental Crime Investigations (ECI) that matter to civil society, and to our planet.

Episode 1 — Scratching the Surface

There's yet another mysterious crime, and Inspector Lee is on the scene. Forensics techniques by the ECI team have “not been approved” for use in the field. But these show previously invisible evidence of wrongdoing. With a new world of clues, Lee realizes that this particular killer has struck many times before. Can it be by negligence? Or worst? The case is grim, but at least there is now hope for justice.

Episode 2 — The poison that lies within

Lee and the ECI team join forces. They are connecting previously unrelated strands of evidence, sifting through old cases while picking up new ones. The image of the killer is materializing. But is the ECI team moving too quickly? There is danger that its techniques may ultimately be on trial, instead of the killer. But the evidence is piling up to produce links between the cause of death, the killer and its victims. The pattern is complex, yet it does make sense. Will people be convinced of the findings?

Episode 3 — Regulate or Rot

The list of suspects is too long. Therefore Lee recruits help from regulators who may have unwittingly been accomplices to these crimes. The case being brought to court is one of the biggest cases of our time. Justice will minimally give notice to such criminals — they can now be held accountable for their actions. Yet Lee and the ECI team hope for a ground-breaking conviction that provides recourse. The court battle is fierce because the defendant has immense resources. Can Justice prevail?

Episode 4 — From the Shadows

Justice is fully served. The accused is found guilty. Yet the ECI team is baffled by a call to another mysterious crime — yet another victim of the same cause as before. Lee feels betrayed, but there can only be two reasons for this surprise. Either ECI's new forensics techniques are flawed, or surveillance over the convicted criminal is failing. The team (including Lee) regroups around this new case, knowing fully well that their reputations (and their jobs) are on the line.

Episode 5 — Justice at last?

Although the characters and the plot of this podcast series are seemingly fictional, they are not. Our investigations team is reporting on actual cases where scientific evidence is at the center of a battle between public and economic interests. Can there be justice at last? Episode 5 lets you be the judge. Click on the “Vote now” button below to determine how this battle will end.
